The 2010 floods dropped ten years worth of rain on Pakistan in a single week, creating a flood zone the size of England with water stretching the distance equivalent from St. Louis to New Orleans and affecting over 20 million people. In partnership with the Business Civic Leadership Center, we developed the Pakistan Flood Response Map to visualize the work of over 130 NGOs operating over 400 projects in the country.

Who is Working on What, Where

A country wide view of who is working where

To add context to the situation the site features an interactive map on the front page that allows users to zoom in to see the extent of the flooding in different parts of the country. Combining map overlays with project coverage data helps tell a complex story about where the greatest need existed in Pakistan after the flood.

Detailed break down on each NGO showing what sectors they are operating in

The site helped the U.S. business community see what resources were needed and where as Pakistan made the transition from recovery efforts to reconstruction. Highlighting actual NGO needs like this and allowing businesses to identify where they could leverage their expertise with NGOs needing assistance in a specific vertical are the first steps toward expanding public private partnerships.

Search

To help communicate these needs and highlight the NGOs working on the ground the site maps projects operating per province and directs users to browse organizations through an integrated faceted search interface to instantly filter NGOs by the province, business sector, cluster, and cross cutting issues impacted by their work. Businesses can then jump to an NGO profile to see where each NGO is working, who they are helping, the resources they need, and what kind of partnerships they are seeking.
